I recently ventured into unknown territory while exploring
and found myself in an area of semi-mature woodland. On this occasion I didn't have
my main camera with me as my primary goal was to scope out some new places to
photograph and I didn't want to take my gear until I knew what to expect. I had
my mobile telephone to hand though which came in useful when I happened upon an
abandoned camp.
As I've discussed before, mobile telephones are very
versatile pieces of equipment which tend to have high resolution cameras. The digital
manipulation software available on the ‘phones is usually excellent too.
For the photograph above, I shot from ground level to give the perspective of approaching the camp at a crouched level as if hiding, rather than striding straight up to it. I then transformed the image to black and white and increased the contrast.
I was pleased with the result; although the environment was relaxed, the photograph puts me in mind of a scene from a horror film. It is clear that someone has been at the camp at some point, but the feeling is that they have since abandoned the area for reasons the viewer does not know.
