A Different Perspective

To get a range of interesting shots, try photographing from a different perspective. Many photographs are taken at eye-level which is the view that people would generally have if they were in the same position. However, if you try to attain an elevated position or take the picture from floor-level (for example), you can capture the same content but from a different view-point.

The picture above was taken from ground level using a small depth of field (f/3.5). After looking at the grass in the foreground, you can see that the path leads towards the arch of a bridge in the distance. This is a typical leading line; something in a photograph which draws the viewer's eye through the frame of the photograph so that none of the image is wasted as empty space. Leading lines can be created using natural surroundings such as a line of trees, or artificial constructs such as walls and fences.
